White marble in new city district
17-07-2008
Property and construction:
A transparent tower, a long bridge and three adjoining islands will be the new landmark for Copenhagen Port. Combined, the project constitutes a very new district which arouses associations to large cities such as Barcelona and Rotterdam.
The sea is glittering incitingly against the grandiose tower which is built at the end of the pier. From the tower a long bridge crosses the water and catches the building across. The 65 m tall bridge will link Østerbro with Langelinie and its elevation is not only spectacular but also a necessity in order for the ferries to pass under it. The construction is part of the new skyline for Copenhagen Port and at the same time a new recreational district.
The basic idea behind the project is that the district is to be considered as three islands each with its own identity. The islands are not concrete, separated islands on the contrary they are three different concepts which are merged into one district in the water, writes epn.
The island farthest out at the end of the pier will be one large UN city and here all the UN’s Danish activities are to be located. The new offices are estimated to be finished in 2012 and will be a natural centre for the new district.
According to the architect both the height of the tower as well as the UN island will be important to the way that Copenhagen considers itself because the new project on the Marmormolen (the Marble Pier) will signal a place where various worlds get together.
The architectural impression is not final yet as some of the construction may be up for a new architect competition. But the basic idea with the tower and the bridge will be realized and during 2009 the final plans for the new district will be in place. It is the intention that the citizens are to be actively involved in the development of the area.
